Subject: enquiry about BDS scope abroad
Date: 28-Sep-2008
Question: Hi,
I am pursuing bds and i wanna go abroad after this can you clear the future of this course there?
Answer: Dentistry is a highly respected profession in all countries of the world. In many developed countries, dentists are one of the richest professionals. In some places, patient waits up to 2-3 months for a dental appointment and pay as much as ten- hundred times the cost of the same treatment in India. However, most nations do not recognize the Indian degree i.e. BDS.

UK, USA and Australia have a stringent norm to allow foreign Dental graduates to enter the country. You may be aware that medical education requires clinical practices, for which proper certification is necessary. Dentistry as taught here is not fully recognised and Indian dentists are not allowed to enter clinical areas.

This is a long drawn process and before you ask for certification from respective Dental Councils of these countries you may have to get pre-qualification by applying to a Dental College. Most Dental Colleges in both countries do require you to follow more courses before being eligible for registering for further education. In the UK and USA higher education in dentistry depends on the availability of job vacancies, which at present is very difficult and a long waiting list prevails, as first preference is for citizens of their countries and then only for foreign nationals.

But on the successful completion of these courses there, you would really have a bright career as a dentist.

All the best
