Question: I am graduate from S.N.D.T college, Pune in food science & quality control & want to pursue my career in food industry as quality controller. I have also appeared for P.G. diploma in dietetics from All India Inst.Of Hygiene & Public Health. I would like to know how far I am eligible for this job & how bright are my job prospects in this field. Plz guide
Answer: Quality control department is responsible for the isolation, identification and characterisation of food material. Chemists and food technologists are part of this department.

The work in this area is assigned to a chemist/food technologist, who examines all the raw material and every input received in the plant. The work also involves looking after on-line quality control, regular examination of the product procured and dispatched.Home economists - Candidates with specialisation in food and nutrition, and dietetics, work for manufacturing companies or food companies. Their work involves testing products and recipes prepared accordingly.

So you are very well eligible for this job. Proliferation of hi-tech hospitals and the perceived boom in "medical tourism'' means more opportunities for specialists in food science and technology. In industries where the turnout is high, food technologists are in demand to carry out a variety of tasks such as harnessing products from wastes, examining food for contamination, conceiving new methods to enhance the economy of production and improvising the technique of food processing and preservation. You can get a chance to work with major companies from the food processing sector like, McDonald’s, Pepsi, Coke, Venky's, Godrej, HLL, Amul, Pravin, Haldiram, Monginis, Chitale Bandhu, Cadbury, Nestle, Lijjat Group etc. Thus, from the local market to the global market, food technology students have good job opportunities.

You can get placed in manufacturing industries, where they provide their skills in monitoring the storage, processing, hygiene, temperature-control and experimenting etc. Food technologists also work in research laboratories or on production lines to develop new products, test current ones, and control the overall food quality. This field can prove to be a very rewarding career.
