Subject: CFA or MBA for Telecom Engineer.
Date: 19-Jul-2008
Question: Hi

I am a telecom engineer having more than 6 years of experience. I have a desire to pursue a career of hard core finance guy.

So actually I am now confused as whether to do an MBA or go for CFA? If MBA which would be a part time, then what are opportunities as part time courses does not provide placement options and the question remains the same for CFA as what are the options available after completeion of CFA?

Answer: Since you are an engineer, it would be better for you to pursue MBA rather than CFA as engineering graduates with sound quantitative aptitudes are most welcome in I-banks as they do a lot of model building for Market/Investment/Credit risk and also Valuations. But as you say you won't be able to MBA except a part time course , then I think CFA would be a better alternative. As part time management courses are not given much importance as compared to full time courses, unless you do it from top management institutes like IIMs/DU-FMS.

The openings available to CFA degree holders are in Banking, Insurance, Corporate Sectors and Finance, Leasing Companies. Even organisations like Railways, Reserve Bank of India and Financial Institutions like ICICI, IDBI, IFCI and UTI have given due recognition to the CFA programme.

All the best
